Mobilization of stakeholders

Background

The Gesvres and Cens water bodies currently have poor status. Yet, maintaining and protecting riverside vegetation contributes to watercourse good ecological status. Watercourse maintenance is the responsibility of river-front owners. We currently see a general lack of maintenance by these river-front owners. Implementation of a local momentum, with contribution from stakeholders involved on the ground, and in particular private owners, is aimed at re-establishing the proper working of aquatic environments. This involves participative work, communication media, meetings and connecting stakeholders.

The action focuses on the Gesvres and Cens river basins.

Objective

The objectives of this action are to:

  • Roll out evidence-based environmentally-friendly practices in the river basin, so they will be applied by private owners in particular.
  • Train residents on maintenance methods, applicable legislation. The target public are the owners of watercourse frontages, operators of agricultural holdings, anglers, individuals or institutions.
  • Create local maintenance momentum by residents and users of watercourses

Description of the action

This action is broken down into several sections :

1- Reliance on an existing not-for-profit organisation

Exchange on good practice developed, identification of obstacles and leverage, of methods etc.

2- Implementation of participative work sites

3 participative work sites involving residents will be organised. Partnerships between the stakeholders involved in the field (anglers, farmers, inhabitants, elected representatives, etc.) will be established to restore proper aquatic environment function.

3- Support for the dynamic created and information

Meetings will lead to networking of stakeholders and upskilling of the various target audiences on river maintenance knowledge and practices. The creation of one or more residents’ associations will be encouraged. This action will be widely promoted.
