Support for stakeholders to promote collective water management

Description of the action

This action is broken down into several sections:

1- Diagnostics on 100 volunteer irrigators’ areas in the form of a fine evaluation of practices, installation of capacitive probes etc. Also, technical guidelines will be devised (action plans) on the changes to be made on holdings (change of rotation, adaptation of crops, modification of technical itineraries etc.)

The objective is thus to provide support for at least 75 agricultural holdings to help them improve their practices. Summary sheets on changes in crop rotation, equipment upgrades and recommendation updates will then be compiled.

2- Drafting of a collective management strategy and of a convergence plan for each area

A strategy for the collective management of water and a convergence plan will be written in each area. Each strategy will be in keeping with the recently signed protocol of undertaking. The latter will define the procedures to follow to reduce volumes withdrawn  and to remain within withdrawable  volume guidelines. Finally, disconnection of lakes and pools and identification of alternative resources is also to be taken into account. Wastewater from water treatment plants will also be covered.

Main results expected

Plan to adapt withdrawn  volumes to summer withdrawable  volumes by mobilising a number of levers : substitution, capping and/or pooling of volumes in the 3 river basins in deficit. This plan will set up  three collective management strategies, a regional roadmap, change in the farmers’ technical itineraries etc.

Structuring into three irrigators not-for-profit organisations in each of the target areas
