Life Revers'eau - Training elected representatives

Background

The large water cycle deals with complex concepts and should benefit from a long-term approach. Recent legislation now puts the district councils at the heart of decision-making on the small and large water cycles, by means of management of water environments and flood risk remits. District councils, in liaison with all the water policy stakeholders, should from now on drive new policies to protect aquatic environments and wetlands, preserve biodiversity, develop green and blue corridors, preserve drinking water catchment areas, promote environmentally-friendly agricultural models and roll out these policies in the field and to local communities.

The arrival of new elected representatives (2020 municipal elections in particular, but also regional and county elections in 2021) should be supported by training courses to enable them to take ownership of the importance of water-related issues. The major water issues need to be better understood and included in infrastructure and development policies.

Description of the action

This action is broken down into several sections:

1- Analysis of feedback from similar actions

The work conducted aims to put forward a suitable training offer which is useful on top of existing training.

2- Training implementation

Presidents of district councils and their elected representatives having recently taken up their positions or renewing their term are in charge of a wide range of subjects. Their awareness of water quality issues but also wide-reaching knowledge of existing tools and resources to be able to make a firm commitment to a policy for the recovery of good water status are crucial.
