Le Mans Metropolitan Council covers 20 municipalities and almost 300 000 inhabitants. Within the Sarthe area, 27% of water bodies are in a good ecological status, steady proportion since 2017. Surface water status is on average “medium”. The issues faced are among others obstacles to runoff, a low river fishes indicator, and diffuse pollution.
Le Mans Metropolitan Council is committed to recovering water quality. It is responsible for management of water environments and flood risk (GEMAPI ) and leads directly or through its partners different actions in the framework of the CT EAU Huisne downstream and CT EAU Sarthe median and downstream. Regarding actions on humid areas, Le Mans Metropolitan Council has applied in 2022 to the Pays de la Loire Regional Council to obtain the “Territory Committed for Nature” label. Beside, Le Mans Metropolitan Council has introduced the water theme in its Territorial Coherency Plan and its Territorial Climate Air Energy Plan.
Given its competences, Le Mans Metropolitan Council falls within the LIFE REVERS’EAU project by implementing a restoration of ecological continuity of its waterbodies (action C6).
